4th of July Special: The Declaration Auction, FIFA Stickers, and NFL Card Speculation

Ryan Alford and Bella Shafer are back on Collector Nation with a fast-moving episode about how wide the collectibles world has become. They start with Fourth of July energy, Joey Chestnut, and the rare Declaration of Independence broadside hitting the auction world before moving into Panini’s FIFA World Cup sticker books and why low-cost, fun collecting still matters in a market full of expensive boxes and high-end chases.
From there, Ryan and Bella talk through international soccer card movement, preseason football card opportunities, and which players could see hobby momentum before the NFL market heats up. Ryan also shares what he is watching ahead of The National, including vintage Jordans, Bo Jackson, Ken Griffey Jr., Trevor Lawrence, Josh Allen, and cards he may move at the show.
The episode finishes with a look at the next phase of Collector Nation and why the team is building a hobby-focused platform that gives collectors and creators a more direct place to be seen. It is a weekly hobby check-in that blends collector culture, market timing, event prep, and the bigger question of what people are willing to chase next.

We're have Golden's auctioning off the friggin' Declaration of Independence. In today's news of everything's for sale. Yeah. Or anything's for sale. How do you put a price on something so priceless? It already has a comp on National Treasure, which is priceless. We have the FIFA World Cup sticker books. Can't even find them at the stores anymore. In the news of one way Panini's staying relevant. Sorry, Panini. It's true. Germany and the Netherlands, both out of the World Cup. Star players from those teams, their cards have already dropped 20 to 40%. Probably should have dropped more. I mean, especially Germany and Netherlands. Let's be honest. Yeah, football preseason is coming up. Minnesota will be high in my league findings. Jaden Daniels is going to have a bounce back if he stays healthy. Trevor Lawrence is going to have a big year. And then I do like Josh Allen. Josh! He's going to have a big year. Welcome to the Collector Nation podcast here on the Collector Nation Network. Whether you're chasing grails or calling bluffs, we take you inside the hobby. Welcome. Here are your hosts, Ryan Alford and Brian Lutton. What's up, guys? Welcome to Collector Nation. You know, I read something, Bella, and Bella Schaefer here with me. It's Bella and Ryan today. Yeah, just us. No Brian. Brian's, you know, vacationing in Tulum. No. He's got some big meetings this week before the 4th of July. Happy 4th of July. I know. Exciting. Happy day before. I think it's got to be like one of my favorite holidays. Fourth of July Eve. Yeah. Kind of roll, doesn't roll off the tongue, but we hope everyone's doing well. And that's why I'm having my, I noticed, I grabbed this from the cooler of random drinks. I buy random drinks. Cole buys random drinks. I think maybe even Bella now. I don't know. It might just be Ryan and Cole buying random drinks. But we're having the Nathan's twist. Number one is delicious and it's lemonade. But it reminds me of what happens on the 4th of July, which is one of the great sports events. And I'm calling it a sporting event of the season. And it is the hot dog eating contest. I mean, that is sport, American sport, if there is one. Yeah, I. The athletes that come from around the world to Coney Island. To get their ass whooped by Joey Chestnut. By Joey Chestnut. Every year. Yeah, I mean, I tell you what, that guy, I bet he's doing his push-ups. He's doing his, I don't know what he does. I don't want to know what he does. Esophagus, like, exercises, I don't know. I will never forget like two years ago when like a protester ran up on stage. He choked him out mid hot dog eating contest and then still continued to win. Crazy. So cheers to Joey Chestnut for getting his 700th victory this year, I'm sure, if he's in it. I keep waiting for something terrible to happen. Like, I don't know. I just can't imagine. Like, I don't, like, well, I'm a pescatarian, so I don't eat hot dogs to begin with. But even before then, I didn't like hot dogs. So I'm just, like, imagining the process of that and what the aftermath of that would be is just, like... Yeah, it's a great American sport. Nothing says America and 4th of July like the hot dog eating contest. Does Joey Chestnut have trading cards? I think he might actually have a few, yes. Cole's giving a guess, and I thought as soon as you said that, that I have seen them and Cole verified. I will say, you know... It is kind of a metaphor for the American way of just overdoing everything. I mean, yeah. Well, have you seen like in European countries, they'll have like an American section of food items, like a grocery store. And it's always like a mayo bottle that's like ginormous. Yeah. You can't even blame them because eating 80 hot dogs and, you know. You know, excess, everything in excess, including excess. Yeah. The American way. And, you know, we're, have Golden's auctioning off the friggin' Declaration of Independence or one of them. You know, in today's news of everything's for sale. or anything's for sale. Have you seen the movie The Master of Disguise? I have seen the movie where they actually, it was not Master of Disguise, it was National Treasures. They were stealing the Declaration of Independence. Nicolas Cage, one of the great actors of our day. And I'm being serious, I actually like Nicolas Cage. It is a good movie. He has a special place in my heart because of Raising Arizona. If you haven't seen that, go see it. That's fine. It's... Yeah, when I saw they were, you know, auctioning off one of the copies of the Declaration of Independence, I was like, and that makes sense. Yeah, that's gold. And I love it. That's so on brand for him, like having something that ridiculous and auctioning off. It's amazing. And what will that go for? How do you put a price on something so priceless? National Treasure said it was priceless. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. The bar, it already has a comp on National Treasure, which is priceless. So, yeah. Is it going to be a million? I don't know. I mean, some rich person that just has the most ridiculous collectibles, you would think this would be pretty high up there. Yeah, there's only one of 10 of them because it's one of the declarations that they would post on for people to see. So it's not like the one that has obviously everyone's signatures, but it has like John Hancock's signature on it. You know, this feels like it's set up for something nefarious. So here's what I mean. One of our enemies just buys it and burns it on live television or something. I mean, I was thinking more like Ocean's... No, we're not stealing it, but like some or some or like Mr. Beast, you know, makes a contest around it. Probably. And it gets ruined in the process. I don't know. I mean, they're making making everything a collectible now. And, you know, sitting in front of us, we have the the FIFA World Cup sticker books, which if you haven't seen these already, they're pretty cool. And they I mean, they've been flying off the shelves and the stickers can't even find them at stores anymore. Yeah. Yeah. In the news of one way, Panini staying relevant. Sorry, Panini. It's just true. We do nothing but tell the truth here on this show. But I do. Or attempt to. If I tell a lie, it's unintentional. Yeah. Misinformed by my producer. But. Okay. I'm kidding. Or an exaggeration. I mean, I do exaggerate. My wife says I do. But I'm a good storyteller. You exaggerating? Never. Yeah. So, but I will say this. It's fun. I'm going to stay in my lane, which is not like too much specifics as much as it's fun. And I see them everywhere. Every gas station. And I have attempted to buy the stickers just to see and see if I can get that messy. Hey, you want to win, you got to play. You miss every shot you don't take. Exactly. But I can't even take a shot because they're always sold out at the QT I go to. That little sticker thing is empty. They have these, but no stickers. Well, I do think it's nice because I think it makes... Because the collectible industry as a whole, I think, has gotten a little bit unaccessible. And the fact that, like... hangar pack is 40 bucks. Like, you know, it's just not as accessible for a child or, you know, anything like that. And I think that this is a really fun way to make it more accessible because the stickers themselves aren't even that expensive. I mean, you know, if you go to the gas station, they have dollar scratch-offs and they have $100 ones. So it's very accessible in the lottery world and cards should follow suit. Yeah, no, I agree. Especially when, you know, there's a $200,000 prize that could be won, the, you know, 101. How much are the sticker packs? I mean, they range. There's like a different, there's like $2 options and then there's like big, boxes that are $100, you know, and obviously, because they're more scarce, the secondary market is doing its thing and secondary market. Yeah, they're 20x on eBay. Probably. But you know, I just, I think it makes it a little more fun and brings back like almost like the art of collecting instead of just like trying to flip because like you can't really, once they're in the book, you can't really necessarily flip it unless you, you know, finish the whole thing. Do they give you sleeves to put the stickers in with like maybe some glue on the back of the sleeve so that you don't ruin the cards that keeps the condition? Hey, that'd be a nice, that'd be a good accessory to develop. The sticker. You're always coming up with those ideas. With like a little gummy, like, what was it? Booger glue. Like one of those like little dots. Yeah, that's what it's called. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Glue dots, glue dots. Not the best connotation or mental note, but that's what it's called. Yeah, and continuing on the World Cup, we'll keep it short and sweet. But with Germany and the Netherlands both out of the World Cup in a shocking turn of events, those star players from those teams, their cards have already dropped 20 to 40%. Probably should have dropped more. I mean, especially Germany and Netherlands. Let's be honest. But South Africa losing to Canada, Japan losing to Brazil. I mean, those are all sets. But Germany and Netherlands were the most shocking to me. So those should have dropped like 80%. Yeah. Yeah. I think personally FIFA missed out on potentially one of the best marketing campaigns they could have ever done. If they had, because next round, if both Britain and U.S. make it to the next round, there was a situation in which they could have played on July 4th in Philadelphia. And I think that would have just been cinematic. Yeah. I will say, you know, I've knocked soccer for being a little, and there's so many compelling stories in this. I will admit that this is more interesting to watch. But the penalty kicks at the end is compelling. They need to figure out how to get that to the front of the game. Just the whole game is set up. Because that's some drama. Yeah. I like that. Two things can be true. I could be kind of a little waiting, waiting, good defense. Appreciate all that athleticism. I do. I know they're running fast and they're shopping fast. But the penalty kicks is where it's at. That makes it exciting. Wow. I think we should have penalty kicks to decide more things in life. Can't make up your mind for dinner? Penalty kicks. Yeah, penalty kicks. Nicole and I are going to set the goal, and it's going to be penalty kicks to decide who's doing the dishes and who was right or wrong that evening. Oh, gosh. She probably wins. Yeah, I was about to say, I feel like she would kick your ass. Yeah, she probably would. Switching more into your lane, I know... Football preseason is coming up. This is the time to buy. And so I kind of want to hear some of your thoughts, who maybe you're buying, selling, keeping, while the market's still a little suppressed before all the training camps start up and, you know, the whole market comes. I will say these two first ones, I don't know that I would have in my mind. I'm jury still out for me on JJ McCarthy. I think he's going to have a hard time seeing the field with his the new guy coming in who was electric. And a lot of times Kyler Murray, Kyler Murray is probably going to win that job if I had to get. I mean, let me say this. If he beats out Kyler Murray, then maybe I'm dead wrong. But I don't think that's going to happen. And if Kyler Murray doesn't get hurt – JJ might be holding a clipboard and what's already low might get lower. In theory, he makes sense, but in my book of practicality and knowing who's there and who's going to be motivated. And I can see the Minnesota could surprise people with how far they're loaded on defense. They've got Justin Jefferson. They've got Addison. Like they're, they're pretty stacked. And if, If he can get the quarterback position playing the way it should be and the way Kyler Murray is capable of, I actually like Minnesota quite a bit. This isn't the prediction episode, but that's a little tip for you. Minnesota will be high in my league findings. But the Marvin Harrison Jr., same thing. I don't know. Who's throwing the ball to him for the Cardinals? That'd be my question. I'm not sure they have named a starter yet. Uh, so he is talented, but I don't know that he's going to bounce back unless I know who's throwing the ball to him. Bo Nix. Absolutely. Drake may absolutely. I think they've already proven themselves. I think Jaden Daniels is going to have a bounce back if he stays healthy. And that's been my, my asterisk on him even before the draft two years ago. It's like, this guy's the most talented guy probably in the draft, but can he stay healthy? Yeah. Cause he had the NFL frame if he's going to get hit. four or five times a game. And so far, that's been the issue. So we'll see. If they can protect his backside and he can learn to slide and get down and not take hits. And not that he takes that many hits. It's just he's a... athletic running quarterback. So he's always going to get a little bit more heat. Yeah. You know, in tackling and stuff. So I like all three of those guys. I mean, he's also still young, so... He is. You can't change your frame. Yeah. No, but like learning to... you know, avoid getting hit or when to slide, when to, you know, count your losses a little bit. I think as he develops as a player... Hopefully take it some supplements to, like, strengthen the bones. I mean, I don't know how that... I think I would... I mean, I obviously have a small frame, but I think I'd get hit once and I'd be done for. So... I don't know how some of them do it. These guys are tough, but some not at the body. We'll see. I think he's still ridiculously talented. We'll see what happens. But I do think May, Knicks, Trevor Lawrence is going to have a big year. We should go ahead and call it right now. And yes, I'm biased, but I called it last year. I think you're the most biased person. I am, but their coach has got him playing well, got him confident again. And other than like Josh Allen and Stafford, no one has the tool set. Yeah. arm strength, accuracy, like when he's dialed in. Now, he could be boneheaded, and I'd say that to him. I think I have said it to him. But he is in the right system, and he can make throws that very few on the planet can make, and he can run the ball. I mean... The dude runs like a 4-5-40, and he's 6'5", 235. And he's got baby number two on the way. Yeah. So, you know, stakes are higher. He's going to have a big year. And then I do like Josh Allen. I know this is a really big shot. But if they shore up the receiving situation, which I think they have, he's going to have a big year. Yeah, I mean, I just, I love Josh Allen, that's a person. So I'm hoping that this year is their year. I think there was a little more effort angst and issues with the coaching then came out. I don't think it was like as dramatic as some things are, but I think it was a hindrance. I watched a lot of games. I watch every Buffalo game every minute, and I think their head coach was in over his head. He's a great defensive guy, but putting it all together with offense and defense, I do not think he was a great game day coach and lost them a couple games last year. Okay, if you had to pick right now and, you know, in three months when this becomes more relevant, I want you to put money on not actually, actually, yeah, we're going to put 20 bucks on what player who's not like a mainstream, you know, obviously, like, yeah, not not a mainstream player who you think is going to have great upside value this year. And this is not financial advice. This is just speculation. Yeah. Yes. I actually just, I kind of left the cat in the bag a little bit because we just, we had J.J. McCarthy up on the screen. And Kyler Murray has, could do what happened with Sam Darnold. I think he can do what Sam Darnold did last year and Sam Darnold's cards. You remember us talking about Sam Darnold's cards? I think Kyler Murray's cards could have the same boomerang if they start out hot and he starts out hot. And he's got it in him. It's just, what I don't know is if, is he focused? Is he mature? Or is he still playing video games, you know, until 3 a.m.? I don't know. Because supposedly that was part of the problem was just maturity with him. Was he actually playing video games? I don't know. I made that up. It was more of the maturity. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was, but I do think it was part of it. That's been always in the circles is that more talent and anybody in the game but just didn't take it serious and wanted it his way, didn't listen to the coaches. But I think this is the money year. This is time to get motivated, and he's got the players around him. So if he just pulls out what magic he has in him, that could be a big boob. I think he's. I already have a couple that I've stored back, and I'm probably going to buy a couple more. If I hear J.J. McCarthy beats him out, then I'm selling everything. Sell the house. Sell every card you have of his if J.J. McCarthy beats him out. That's not even saying anything bad about J.J. It just means that he's not what he's used to. Here's our bet. I'll say that J.J. McCarthy will do good this year. Where's a 101 or something I can bet on this? No, the bet will be... $5,000. $5,000. No, the bet will be $20, and we'll see. How about I'll let you open a single pack of your choice, Hobby Pack Anything. There's some expensive packs over there. All right. And you have to... Let's think about that. Buy you a case of beer. Yeah, you have to buy me a case of beer. Case of Ultra. Okay. There we go. There's our bet. Well, for our last few minutes rounding out here, I want to talk a little bit about The National because we got a month. Yep. Right around now. Actually, when this episode releases, we'll be at less than a month. So we're in crunch time now. Crunch time here. Don't make me nervous. You've been to The National. Do you have any cards that you're looking to buy, looking to sell? I'm looking for a couple of vintage Jordans, some Bo Jackson, a few junior. Stuff I'm always buying. Trevor Lawrence. Trevor Lawrence. But look, I'll say this. I have gotten out of my buy anything of my favorite player mode and gone, okay. I'm just buying very unique. You have to come wise. Yeah. I only have the most space to even display it. And it does me do good seeing in a case. So I've got to have room to display it. And my cases are pretty full. Yeah. You should build like a display, like a shrine. So unique. It's not necessarily value. I didn't say value. So unique. You know, Josh Allen. Unique. Trevor Lawrence. All right. Uh, and then I've got a handful of things to move. I've got a Kobe that I'm going to move. Cause I'm just not a Kobe. I mean, I'll respect and think Kobe's a goat. You're one of the goats and it, It's just, you know, my guy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I've got a really nice on-card auto of his that I'll be looking to move. And then, yeah. Are you going to have the boys do any negotiating for you? Of course. Absolutely. I use them for every advantage that they bring. Go smile and wave. Go, go, go. Go smile and wave. Be nice. Go take this one. You know, ask him if he'd take, you know, give 95% for it. Going to pay for your bus ticket home. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know. I got to start thinking of what card I want to find. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. Maybe I'll just need... Maybe, like— You've got to, like, choose something. Like, you know, they're— I'm trying to think of who's, like, the best Furman player ever. Like, in any sport. Sterling Sharp? No, he plays South Carolina. I think I used to— When I was younger, my brother liked Tim Tebow. And he's 15 years old—or 13 years older than me. Tebow's a good one to collect. Like, who doesn't— If you don't like TiVo, I don't like you. That's kind of nostalgic for me. So, I don't know. Maybe I'll go that direction. I also really like, okay, this is niche. I really like the basketball player Taco Falls. I just think he's awesome. I don't know. Really tall guy? Yes. Yeah. I watched him. Like 7'9"? Yeah, yeah. I watched him when he was at UCF during March Madness, and I was like. I think you can get some deals on him. And, yes. Where would I find? I found a 101 that might even fit in your budget. Yeah, so if anyone's listening, I'm going to be at the National, and you have a Taco Falls card. Hit me up. Or any gymnastics cards. I'll do that too. I will say, we will be officially rolling out Collector Nation as a broader network at at the national yeah super excited yeah you're a content creator and want another distribution point that's not exclusive dm dm ryan and we can get that set up dm me or you can reach out through the collector nation We're going to become the TikTok of the hobby. So you want to get in now while you can get verified. So there'll be ad revenue sharing and just you have to do nothing. Your content will roll over into the platform from wherever you're posting now. So you don't even have to do anything. You have the ability to do custom posts and things like that. But... We're gonna make it super easy and it's just another place to get seen and heard. And I mean, it is a clean, clean platform, clean transition. And why not bring in some extra cash? Yeah. And don't you don't have to worry about being positioned next to a GLP one video or a like exercise or Nathan's hot dog eating. Oh, God. Whatever's in your algorithm or in the other person's, you get sort of filtered beside. And that's sort of the problem is the hobby is so specific and there's so much popularity around the content, but it is part of your broader algorithm on all the other platforms. So this is going to be an algorithm driven by you and your hobby choices. And we're pumped about it. It's got some really cool functionality that is proprietary and never seen before and adds value to your collecting journey. Exactly. Well, I'm not sure if there's a better point to end than that one. It's time for this week's Onnit segment of the week. What's up, everyone? It is the Onnit segment of the week. We're here with Leonard Berry, the digital marketing specialist over at Onnit Athlete. Leonard, what's up? Hey, Bella. How you doing? Another week, another new location. Yeah, I'm loving it. You're always on the go. And I heard you're moving this week, so it's probably busy for you, I can imagine. Yeah, yeah, it has been. I mean, I did all the signing stuff, you know, and did the road trip. And now I'm doing the real road trip. Did you ever think you'd be in Nebraska this much in one month? No, definitely not. But I've gone through like 15 states in the past month. So I'm definitely seeing the United States of America, which has been fun. That's exciting. Well, I'm curious, how's Gravity Baseball been doing since the release? Yeah, it's been super awesome. I'm seeing all the feedback from everybody. So when I was on my first road trip, it wasn't out yet. So what I've been doing on this road trip, it's been super fun. So like every time I stop for gas, I'm trying to stop at a Walmart. uh to go in and kind of check out the the shelves and stuff so like Toledo Ohio I saw some gravity baseball uh stopped off in Omaha Nebraska saw some gravity there uh so it's been really cool just to kind of see like where it's at across the country and then we've been getting a lot of people who have been kind of sharing their heads or telling us they discovered the product for the first time never heard of on it but they saw it at their card shop uh with the gravity stuff and so The reception that we've seen has been really cool. And that's exactly what we were going for, of course, you know, with this mixed Chrome national release. So I'm glad to see that the feedback for most people has been that they've really enjoyed it. Yeah, that's awesome. So I heard you all have a little bit of an incentive going because you want to see what people are kind of hitting out of the product. Can you talk a little bit about that? Yeah, definitely. So we have a site set up or a page set up on our website, I should say. So it's onathlete.com slash highlights. you can go there and then you can submit your best polls to us. Uh, so we're looking to, you know, see what people are getting out of gravity baseball. We've got the new case hits with the hollow Forbes. Uh, I've seen a couple of people pull some seven wonders so far. Uh, so we're encouraging fans and anybody who's opening gravity baseball to submit their best hits to us. Uh, And then what we're going to do is we're going to take all these hits together and we're going to put like a collab together on our social media. So it's a cool way for, you know, folks who get recognized for their polls. And like if they're happening at local card shops, you know, like at Collector Nation or whatever, like people can say like, hey, you know, Carson Tinney, Seven Wonders hit at Collector Station and share that with us. And then, you know, in turn, we're going to shout them out about it. So I think it's just a fun way to bring the community together. And as I mentioned. You know, I've been driving across the country, and so to see a collaborative effort on everybody who's opening Gravity Baseball across the country and where the hits are being pulled at and what are the best hits that are coming out, I think it's just super cool to blend together. So we want to feature those for everybody and just let our fans get in on some of the fun. I mean, you just had a huge year across the board. Nana had a huge year across the board from – Indiana football, Michigan's men basketball, UCLA women's basketball, Oklahoma baseball, Texas softball. I mean, just one after another, y'all have really done something big. And I'm super excited to see what football might hold for y'all. Yeah, 2026 football is going to be exciting. Obviously, we hope we can replicate the success of this year. I mean, to have five national champions across, you know, basically the five major sports there for us with football. Both basketballs, baseball, softball, and football, we had national champions. And, I mean, it's pretty crazy that all of them have on-it cards with us. So, you know, testament to those teams and all the hard work that they put in, but also testament to our team kind of behind the scenes that decides – you know, what schools we're going to work with and what players we're going to work with. Cause we captured a lot of those biggest players and biggest moments, like having Tegan Kavon signed for us in Texas softball, Fernando Mendoza, of course, signed in Indiana football that you can't find. I couldn't find that stuff anywhere anymore. Everybody's hunting Fernando autos. You know, Jackson Willits at Oklahoma, the most outstanding player, the men's college world series, like Just a ton of great names, a ton of great teams, and I'm excited because we're always working to expand teams, too. We always want to add schools more so than we want to remove schools. So to see what our team has cooked up in terms of licensing department and what potential new schools might enter the fold for a variety of different sports next year, I think that is going to be really exciting. And it's all going to kick off in August with our first batch of football releases for 2026. Yeah, I mean, full disclosure, I've been trying to hunt down some Indiana football before the preseason starts. But I have also had no luck. But, you know, good for y'all that I have no luck trying to find it. But I think a big opportunity for people right now is those baseball cards as the draft is kind of approaching and, you know, Like you were just saying, you have signed some of the best players and best prospects in the soon-to-be MLB. So I think people should really get on that, especially with the Gravity Baseball being such a timely release for this. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, in Gravity Baseball, you know, we got Rock Chalowski signing in there. He is most likely, we've talked about it a lot, but the de facto number one overall pick, the Chicago White Sox. He's been mocked there for a long time. Nothing has changed. He had an outstanding season. You know, so he's in there in Gravity Baseball. You got other great names from a lot of other top schools as well, especially like guys who are going to be back in college. as well some of those guys from texas like carson tinney is a great great name in there dylan volantis uh from texas as well or money guzman from west virginia so a lot of those within in the team set stuff too like von lackey and drew burris at georgia tech uh along with rock those are probably all going to be top 10 first round selections so just the quality of names and then like in the oklahoma product you know we talked about jackson willett's most outstanding player of the Men's College World Series. Like he signs in there for us. So I just think there's a ton of opportunity for folks. If you're into prospecting, like if you really care and you want to be really ahead of the market, like some of this stuff, is really ahead of the market. You know, it's the first autographs, college uniforms, from the year that they got drafted.
